Save Trestles. The Time is Now!

One of California's finest waves is at great peril. A proposed toll road in Southern Cal greatly threatans a perfect wave as well as precious coastal open space and water quality and the time to act is now! From The Surfrider Foundation:

On Wednesday, February 6, the California Coastal Commission (CCC) will hear the application for the Foothill-South toll road that will run through San Onofre State Park.

Join hundreds (if not thousands) of Surfrider Foundation activists and other opponents of the toll road for a rally at the CCC hearing. Come help us send a clear message that our State Parks and open spaces deserve saving!

This is literally THE most important hearing in regards to protecting Trestles and San Onofre State Park. We need an enormous crowd to attend. Please help spread the word to all your family and friends in Southern California .

The Surfrider Foundation and partners are renting buses and organizing carpools in San Clemente and San Diego . We are also providing lunch, tee shirts, and posters/sign for all supporters. Surfrider has it all organized—you just need to show up.

If you have questions about the hearing, or are interested in organized transportation, email Stefanie Sekich at:, or see

Sun, snow, rain, side-shore wind... a near perfect California day

Awoke this morning in Venice beach to the smell of coffee on the press, and sun coming through the windows of the 1929 California bungalow we'd crashed at the night before. After the usual morning banter, and a visit from Mary, the local Feng Sui expert, we cruised over to the bagel place Adam recommended. The sun was bright, skies blue, and air warm. A nice change from the previous couple days of the trip. Afterwards we grambled into Mollusk Surf Shop. Tim and I were familiar with the original Mollusk in SF but hadn't been to this one. Groovy shop run by groovy people. Some kind, if pricey, Fineline surfboards on the rack in the back.

After Mollusk, we bid adieu to Adam and headed up the Hwy 1 to get the van headed in the right direction and to look for waves. We paddled out at crunchy, desolate Zuma Beach. I admired the crisp, sharp mountain views of Southern California from the water and the occasional barreling, if un-makeable, wave. Pulled in to some fun, crunchy waves and burned off some energy. Satisfied with the sesh, we continued north, stopping at Johnny's in Ventura. I burned myself by ordering a side of chips y salsa, not knowing they came gratis. I commented to a local about the snow on the mountains and he warned "You haven't seen nothin' yet. The big storm is still coming!" With that somewhat ominous warning, we got back on the road. We marveled at the amount of snow on the mountains driving up Hwy 1 through Pt. Magoo.

Tim dropped me in Santa Barbara and he continued north to finish his California mini-tour. I went to bed with the rain pouring and wind whistling.

Bustin' Down The Door

There is a new, fantastic-looking surf movie coming out this week and it is called Bustin' Down The Door. The movie takes a look at the radical and seminal winters of 1975 and 1976 on the North Shore of Hawaii and the group of surfers from Australia and South Africa who "sacrificed everything and put it all on the line to create a sport, a culture and an industry..." Surf Stronger will be at the world premiere at the Santa Barbara Film Festival this week. Check back for a full report of the movie.

A few of the characters from Bustin' Down The Door, enjoying the country.

A Worthy Cause

We were recently asked to contribute to a fund raiser for a very worthy cause: Pro Board Benefit for Jeannie Chesser and Defend Oahu Coalition. Jeannie has lived in Hawaii for most of her life, is fighting cancer. She has been deeply involved with the surfing community both as a surfer, an artist focusing on surf images, and as the mother of a professional surfer. Jeannie was US Champ in 1992. Proceeds to benefit Jeannie Chesser in her current battle with Merkel Cell Carcinoma and the Defend Oahu Coalition, which is an organization that Jeannie supports. We are honored to donate some Surf Stronger gear for this cause. For more information or to donate, check out
