Surf Stronger and TRX Suspension Training

A little over a year ago we were introduced to the TRX Suspension Trainer. Designed by a former Navy Seal, we had an instant respect for TRX. And, after incorporating it into our training, we quickly realized what a great workout tool it is. Read full article.

Santa Cruz Soul, Ward Coffey

Outstanding Santa Cruz shaper (and surfer) Ward Coffey recently re-launched his site as a blog site. Ward has been shaping in Santa Cruz since the early 80's, and when he is not shaping he is ripping the local reefs. (He also shapes all of our boards.)

He's got some cool stories going (like free-diving Steamer Lane) and heaps of great photos and commentary on his shapes. Check out his site for a bit of Santa Cruz soul. And, if you are ever in need of a good custom board, don't hesitate to look up Ward. He'll dial you in.

Follow Your Dreams. Paige Haggerston Wins Australian Junior Surfing Title

Congrats to our friend and up and comer, Paige Haggerston, on winning the Australian Junior Surfing Titles Under 18 Division.

Paige takes her surfing and training seriously, and it shows. We've worked with her a bit on a training program and had the opportunity to video her in Hawaii last year for a to-be-released video series.

With this win, Paige will go to Ecuador next March representing Australia at the World under 18 surfing championships.

Way to go, Paige! Keep ripping.

Surf Stronger 2008 Holiday Gift Guide

It's better to give than to get. Stoke the surfer on your list with one of these great gifts for 2008:

1. Surf Stronger DVD ($29.95) or Surf Stronger Value Package ($69.95). Get one of our top-selling training videos for the surfer on your list or, get a value-package and really save! With the value package you get both DVDs plus a ball for just $69.95. Holiday shipping is free in the US, and half-off on international orders. Visit our store today.

2. Surf Wax ($1 - $2). Great stocking stuffer, inexpensive, and something every surfer can use. (We like Famous Green Label brand wax.) Show them you care, buy ‘em some wax.

3. New media ($18.95 - $29.95) Two excellent new surf films to come out in the last year include, One California Day and Sliding Liberia. Both films offer fresh looks at our sport, and feature excellent cinematography and wave sliding. Also, just out, is a new book by Laird Hamilton: Force of Nature: Mind, Body, Soul (And, of Course, Surfing) Say what you will about Laird, but he is indeed a force of nature, and this book
provides some good motivation and tips for health and wellness.

4. Music ($9.95 / $15.95). One of our favorite albums of the year is Jack Johnson’s Sleep Through The Static Jack is arguably the world's most famous surfer, and what's more, he's an excellent singer and songwriter. This is his best album to date. Jack is also a fellow 1% For the Planet member. Our other pick is the Culver City Dub Collective's Dos. If you have a fondness for reggae and want to listen to a rootsy fresh album, check this out. Great for a pre or post surf listen, or for a backyard BBQ.

5. Health / Fitness gift certificate ($18-$100). Find a quality gym, yoga studio, or spa, and get a gift certificate for one session (1 hour personal training, yoga session, massage).

Get Long, Lean, and Loose with Surf Stronger Stretching

Here is a great little easy-to-learn stretch routine from Surf Stronger that you can do after your next surf session (or at the end of a long day) to help maintain flexibility and looseness. Check it out.

It's Better to Give Than to Reveive

Speaking of Black Friday (isn't that a Steely Dan song by the way?) just in time for the holidays, we just saw a really nice review on our latest release, Surf Stronger--Core Training:

"Now, I’m all for people getting the coveted surfer body by actually surfing, but the Surf Stronger Surfer’s Workout series is a great gift idea for anyone who is unable to surf due to injury or geographical restrictions (i.e. living inland), or someone who harbors a fear of sharks or cold water (a problem in California). It’s also an awesome core workout for surfers on days when the waves are more over-ankle than overhead."

And...

"The gift of health and fitness is in my opinion is the perfect one: it hangs around long after the gift wrap has been recycled."

Women on Waves This Weekend in Capitola

Surf Stronger is proud to help sponsor this weekend's Women on Waves (WOW) surf competition and fundraiser in Santa Cruz, California. Not only is this a fun-sprited longboard comp, it also raises money for some very worthy causes. From the WOW site:

For the past 10 years this event has raised over $35,000 for the Santa Cruz Community. Proceeds will go to WomenCARE, a non-profit that supports women with cancer and their families; Women's Crisis Support - Defensa de Mujeres, a non-profit that helps women and children subjected to domestic violence and the Barry Hamby Cabrillo College Scholarship which helps three students each semester cover the cost of tuition.

See you in Capitola!

Get on the Ball Already!

If you are not training with a fit ball, you are really missing out. The unstable nature, and design of a fit ball, makes it a killer piece of exercise equipment for surf-specific core/strength/balance/flexibility training -- areas all surfers should focus on. (It also makes a great chair in the office, or at home.) It's no wonder that surf super-stars like Mick Fanning, Timmy Reyes, and Serena Brooke all swear by them.

This month we are offering a special on our burst-resistant quality Fit Balls in our online store. The balls go for $24.95 and are essential for surf-specific training. You can get cheaper, flimsier balls, but they lose their shape quickly and are more likely to burst. Get a quality ball like a Fit Ball. And you can get the ball and one of our DVDs and really save. Check our store today.

Movember - Grow a Mo for Men's Health Awareness

Hey it's officially Movember (where has the year gone) and as such time to grow a Mo (or a stache as it's known around these parts) for men's health awareness.

Movember (the month formerly known as November) is an annual charity event held during November. At the start of Movember guys register with a clean shaven face. The Movember participants, known as Mo Bros, have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their Mo, raising money along the way to benefit men's health - specifically prostate cancer and male depression.

Men lack awareness about the very real health issues they face. There is an attitude that they have to be tough - "a real man" - and are reluctant to see a doctor about an illness or go for regular medical checks.

Movember aims to change these attitudes and make men's health fun by putting the Mo back on the face of fashion and in the process raise some serious funds for key men's health issues, including:

Growing a 'mo is fun, and this gives you all the more reason.

See the Movember site for details, http://au.movember.com.

Kelly Slater and Surfing Stronger As You Age

Kelly Slater recently won an astounding 9th World Championship title. Surfing performance has never been higher, and Slater wins it all by completely dominating the season. At age 36, he is the oldest surfer on the tour and the oldest ever to win it.

Now granted, Slater is a freak of nature, but his performance and his age raises an interesting gambit: You can surf at your better as you get older! Here at Surf Stronger HQ, the average age is about 36, so we certainly believe this!

Here are our three tips to surf better as you age:

1. Train. When your not surfing, you should be cross training for surfing. As we like to say, "better fitness equals better surfing." Of course surf-specific training is the way to go. (See our Surf Stronger videos for more)

2. Surf! This is obvious, but the more you surf, the better you'll get. Also, try a variety of conditions and boards. The variety will help your surfing.

3.Watch surfing: Videos, contests, webcasts, your local surf spot, and yourself. Get yourself taped and see how you really look out there and how can you improve it. Compare your surfing to the best surfers and notice how they use their bodies to make elegant powerful turns. Watch where they bend their knees, move their feet, and how they use their arms and shoulders to direct where they are going. You will get better.

Here's to surfing stronger as you age.

9 time world champ, Kelly Slater.

Under the Sun -- A good looking new surf film

There's a new surf movie out, Under the Sun, that looks like a goodie. It chronicles the surf history and scenes of Australia's cosmopolitan, busy Gold Coast versus the more laid-back, groovy Byron Bay. While the two regions are only about one hour apart, the scenes are quite different. Both surf towns are heaps fun and have heaps of good people and unreal waves. This film looks really cool. Playing in San Francisco tonight
at 111 Minna Street (at 2nd St).

The aim of this blog is to bring you news and updates from the Surf Stronger Crew, and to bring you the best in surfing health, fitness and lifestyle. To that end, we'd like to share with you inspiring surf sites around the web from time to time.

The first such site is Country Feeling Surfboards. These guys are the real deal! Country Feeling Surfboards is pushing the limits of green surf board building. From their site: "Country Feeling Surfboards celebrates the nature that surrounds us with surfboards made with environmentally friendly materials: soy-based and sugar-based foams; deck inlays made from hemp, organic cotton, bamboo and silk; and resin that is catalyzed by the sun."

Also the site features rich photos from Hawaii, some "country" tunes by North Shore musician Jack Johnson, and a cool blog.

5 Tips for Open Water Swim Training

One of the best cross-training activities for surfing is swimming. Open water swimming is even better because you are in the elements and you can enjoy nature up close and personal. Most of our open water swimming tends to take place in the San Francisco Bay, where the temps are a bit cooler (56-63!), the water a bit murkier, the challenge a bit higher. But becoming comfortable in open water is great, because sooner or later everyone snaps a leash and has to swim to shore. Having good swim skills is key for surfing! With that, here are our 5 tips for open water swim training.

1. Safety. Swim with a mate, preferably in front of a lifeguard. For added safety, tell the lifeguard your swim route prior to going out. Also know your limits and build up your distance.

2. Note the conditions before you head out. You'll want to look for rips, currents, etc., and also suss out a swim route to aim for (5 buoys, to the sailboat, out to the opening and back, etc.)

3. Equipment. For colder water, definitely get a neoprene cap ($20) and wax ear plugs ($5-10). You'll probably also want a good pair of goggles. With these essentials (and a suit of course) you are all set. We recommend the ear plugs to prevent water from getting in the ears, and to prevent against long term ear damage (Surfer's ear!). Also we always swim with a brightly colored swim cap so you are extra visible.

4. Start slow and build. Say you are doing a 1KM swim. We usually go: easy 200, build 200, hammer 400, warm-down 200. A warm-up and warm-down is always a good idea and building or doing intervals makes for good aerobic conditioning. During your swim it is good to site off of different markers (buoys, boats, etc.). Lift your head every 10-20 strokes or so to ensure you are on course.

5. Sign up for an open water swim race or group swim. Swimming with a big group or in a race can be good fun. Find a local race and go for it!

Making It

Sting (The Police) once said that he knew he'd "made it" when he heard a window washer singing "Roxanne" somewhere in New York City, sometime in the 70's. We had our own brush with notoriety and fame recently when we walked in to our neighborhood sushi place and the proprietor, Sang, had a SURF STRONGER roll on the menu. Yeah it's a bit pricey, but it's the best damn roll we've ever had!

Sliding Liberia on da' North Shore

We've said it before, and we'll say it again: Sliding Liberia is a superb new surf documentary well worth a viewing. Our good friend, Crystal Thornburg, is one of the surf stars in the picture, and will be presenting the movie this Saturday at Café Haleiwa on the North Shore of O'ahu.

If you happen to live on O’ahu (and we know there are a lot of Hawaiian Surf Strongers out there!) or plan on visiting the island this Saturday, cruise up to Duncan Campbell's Café Haleiwa and check out a screening of the film. Guaranteed fun.

Surf Stronger Invades Surf City

The Surf Stronger Crew enjoyed a killer weekend in Huntington Beach (aka Surf City) for the kick-off of the US Open of Surfing. Highlights included a team signing with Surf Stronger's Serena Brooke, the surf at the pier Sunday morning (head high, glassy, wall'y...and warm!), and endless rounds of sushi at Tuna Town on Main. The signing was a big success with lots of surf stoked folks coming out for a poster and chance to meet Serena. We nearly ran out of posters! Special thanks to Sambazon Acai for providing delicious, healthy drinks and to Huntington Surf & Sport for having us. Also a hearty thanks to all the folks who turned up at the event. Good luck Serena in this week's competition!

One Good Thing About Music...

Music is a huge part of our program here at Surf Stronger: Before a surf or a workout, during a workout, on a run, driving our cars...in the lineup in our heads. We like music. That's probably why for Surf Stronger--Core Training we went to the effort of assembling an all-star group of musicians called the Surf Stronger House Band, and recorded an original groovy soundtrack. We got Bay Area legend Tim Bluhm (Mother Hips) and the equally legendary Steve Adams (ALO) and from there rounded out the group with sweet playing Danny Lebowitz on guitar (ALO) the amazing Jackie Greene on keys and the ever (rock) steady Adam Topol on drums. Pay attention to the music on Surf Stronger--Core Training and let us know what you think. "One good thing about music, when it hits you feel no pain."

Protect California Beaches. Protect Trestles!

NOTE: Looks like there are some changes on when this meeting will take place. It will NOT take place at the Bren Center. See www.savetrestles.org for updates.

While the Surf Stronger crew hails from Central California, Trestles is near and dear
to our heart -- wonderful surf spot, and wonderful natural, California coastline that makes this place so epic. It's under fire from development but there's something we can do to protect it:

(taken from SaveTrestles.org)

The biggest hearing yet for Trestles will take place Friday, July 25th at the Bren Center on the campus of University of California, Irvine.

This hearing marks the next critical battle in a decade long fight to protect Trestles!

We already won the battle, here in California, when the California Coastal Commission (CCC) struck down the toll road on grounds it violates the Coastal Act. But, the TCA refused to accept the CCC decision and has appealed it to the Federal Government.

Now, we need to ensure the Federal Government supports important California environmental laws and upholds the Coastal Commission decision.

Fish Choices: How You Can Make a Difference

For the last handful of years, the surf industry, and the surf community for that matter, has talked a lot about fish surfboard designs. While we enjoy the skate-y, fun aspect of fish boards as much as anyone, we thought we’d talk about real fish in this post, and focus on a topic the surf industry has largely ignored: Sustainable and responsible fishing.

As consumers, this is an area where we can really make a difference. Did you know that many fish are in grave danger of becoming extinct due to over-fishing practices? And, many of these fish are on the menu at your favorite fish house!
“I’ll take the swordfish.”
“What’s that you say? Swordfish? Are you kidding me?”

Swordfish is one of the worst things you can eat if you care about swordfish being around for your kids and grandkids. Largely we think this is an awareness and education issue. Knowing what you should and shouldn’t eat is where it begins. Lucky for us, there are a couple great resources to get educated. Check out the Monterey Bay Aquarium web site for more information. They even have handy pocket guides that can help you make choices that support healthy and abundant oceans.

Check it out and tell a friend.

Stay healthy and stay sustainable.

Surf Fitness for Surf Travel

Last week I had the opportunity to join a good friend for a quick trip to Centro America for 6 days of surfing, sunning, fresh fish, cold beers and plenty of hammock time. I knew about the trip for about a month, and with fairly inconsistent surf in Central Cal this time a year, I made sure I trained hard the month before I left. My weekly workout diet leading up to the trip consisted of two to three Surf Stronger workouts per week, two swims, and the occasional surf or skate session. I'm happy to report the training paid off! Upon our arrival, the swell was pumping: 6-8 foot beach break heaving onto the tropical beach. Awhooo! We paddled out at dusk to a hungry, competitive crowd and caught a few nice ones. For the rest of the week we surfed two to three times per day (with the surf never dropping below head high) and got our fair share of waves. I gotta say, the heat and dehydration got to me every session before any fatigue or soreness. It's trips like these where you really notice how well fitness can pay off for surfing!

The author, right place, right time.

A Look Back

Making a full-length, commercial video is not easy work. It’s down right tough at times. Pre-production for our second release, Surf Stronger—Core Training with Serena Brooke, took us from LA to Santa Cruz to San Francisco to Hawaii to Australia, to Santa Barbara, and finally back home to Central California. The work involved is heavy: program design, script writing, rehearsals, praying for good weather, film crews, interviews, production schedules, flights, sandy camera gear, contracts, music selection, recording sessions, long distance phone calls, long distance e-mail, dodgey lodging, sunburns, editing, more editing, and a bit of surfing, core training, and dreaming along the way. One secret we can share is this: Find and work with not only talented people, but good people whose hearts are in the right place. If you can do this, things fall into place a lot easier.

Making this video was also a heck of a lot of fun. Here now is a look back in photos at the year of making this new video. We hope you like the new release.

Stay healthy and see you in the water.
